Sonatina in C
The Sonatina in C is the first of a collection of short multi-movement concert pieces for organ, each of them no more than about ten minutes long in their entirety. This Sonatina is in two energetic movements, the first a more melody-driven compact sonata-form movement, and the second a fughetta-style movement in ternary form.

First movement development
The opening movement is a long build-up, starting from a single line and building to a full-organ conclusion, passing through two contrasting rhythmic themes, a small fugal section, and some long pedal points. Throughout the movement, the main, cheerful melodic theme occurs almost continually, resting occasionally to feature the more syncopated, darker subsidary idea.

Second movement theme
The second movement is a loosely fugal ternary-form piece on a rapid theme. After the fugal exposition and a small transpositional extension, the middle section of the piece takes over with more homophonic, choral textures, eventually leading back to a recapitulation of the fugue.

The Sonatina in C is a pair of fine, challenging movements, usable together or separately. Either makes a solid prelude or postlude for church use. Both movements are playable on pretty well any two-manual (or greater) instrument with a reasonable variety of stops. And its position as the first of a series offers a hint of what is to come!
